Top 10 Posts

Albert Matos
  • I choose Albert's proposal because I think that the world needs a social change. His idea of making sutdents to take Sociology courses it's helpful because everyone would be oriented about the social issues around the world and these problems could be reduced.
Elsa Obando
  • I personally loved Elsa's proposal because it is a constant fight every single day. People are often discriminated and treated unequally because of their race, ethnicity, etc. Sometimes, this people are very hard working and because their from the minority group, their not treated the way they deserved. Everyone should be treated equally, no matter their race, religion beliefs, etc.
Ashley Galarza
  • Puerto Rico is a small island, and because of that fact we often get mistreated. It doesn't matter how powerful it's our country, but we all are HUMAN BEINGS and we all should be treated equally and be heard. I like Ashley's proposition because it is not fair that the government are not doing anything to help our society and we have to wait four years to elect new candidates. I think this proposal might sound a little rebellious, but I approve it.
Paulette Arquer
  • Paulette stated a lot of good points about the Elderly's Rights. I agreed with her proposal because even though we all should be treated the same, there are some privileges that senior citizens should not have. Some of them should not be allowed to drive because their putting their life in danger. I think that they are a big part of our community and should not be mistreated.
Mykaella Morales
  • I approved this proposal because it talks about one of, if not the most controversial topic of the United States: homosexuality. This people are often mistreated because of their preferences. I think it's ridiculous because the cave days and the Hitler days are over. We're in the 21st Century, and freedom of speech is one of the most important facts of this era. Homosexuals should have the same rights of other people! They are normal persons, just with different preferences. Is that a sin? NO
Arshad Khalil
  • I support Arshad's proposal because he's fighting for a noble cause. Muslim Americans are often humilliated and oppressed just because of their race. Americans are so good on judging a group of people just for the acts of one person. This people should be treated equally, because they worked hard to stand where they are right now. They deserve to have same rights that a lazy white american has, or any other american!
Ligny Lugo
  • I support Ligny's idea. The ammendments are fine, what is not fine it's people's minds. It's unaceptable and unbelievable that there are still racists. African Americans are normal people, I don't get the hatred towards them. People are just taking History from like 200 years ago way too personal, and are blaming people that doesn't have anything to do with that past. African Americans should be treated equally!
Nelsharry Baerga
  • I like this proposal. Very simple, but very helpful. People with dissabilities may have a physical or mental disfunction, but they are humans, and God does not creates useless people. We all humans, with dissabilities or not, are talented and unique in different ways. Having a dissability doesn't make you a bad person, it just makes you different, but they can still do whatever they want.
Alysha Alvarado
  • I think the ERA (Equal Rights Ammendment) it's a brilliant idea. It will brake barriers. Problems like discrimination and racism can be eliminated. It is the change we all need. Maybe the World will never be perfect, but we can aim high and try to get there. This proposal should be taken in consideration.
Stephanie Ruiz
  • Let's make a change! Women that are mistreated tend to hide or to be in silence just because of fear and shame. The law should help woman to stand up against any barriers they might find in their lives. They are an important part of our society, and they need the Government's support to keep holding on!

BE HEARD! My Proposal

Throughout the years, students have been mistreated. Our voices are not being heard, and we are letting other people make the important decisions for us. We are the future of the world; that is why we study hard. We don’t have to let anyone else make our decisions. We should have the power. Let’s raise our voice and speak our minds!
In these days it is hard to speak ourselves because the Government, Policeman and Principals cut our wings when we try to protest against something. In the past, many protests were made in order to live in an Independence Nation. People made a lot of sacrifices in order to be treated equally. We now live in a free country thanks to those people who fought for us. Why does it have to be different now?
Everyone in this world should have the same rights. Every student, doesn’t matter if it’s a Middle School, a High School or a College Student, they should have the right to be heard. Every student should have a free and a good education, and if it’s not free, it should be affordable. Education should not be a privilege, it is a RIGHT. As a student, if you have any concern or doubt, you should have the right to ask and make a change. You should be treated equally because you are the future. The future politicians, and other High Commanders, are studying hard in school right now.
That is I propose the RYV Foundation, or the "Raise Your Voice Foundation". This foundation will work along the Government, and there would be at least one Social Worker from this foundation on each PUBLIC SCHOOL OR UNIVERSITY. Students often have doubts or concerns but they are not heard because School Principals are too busy to hear their concerns. This counselor would have only one job: LISTEN, and ONLY LISTEN to the students, and will try to help them by any matter. Neither school principals or any other faculty member shall intervene in this process.

"Raise your voice, Speak Your Mind, and Make a Change, because WE ALL MATTER."

Changes Throughout the Years

Throughout the years students have been mistreated, not only in High School but also in College. Back in the 1600s and 1700s, schools were really strict about allowing people in schools. At first, only wealthy white students were allowed to attend High School and College. Sometimes, not even women.
Many years passed and women were allowed to go to College. After the Civil War, African Americans were also allowed to go to College. Because of segregation, special schools and universities were built for them. After segregation ended in the 1960s, students from different races were allowed to attend a normal college.
Now, we don’t see a lot of racism in schools, even though it still exists. The main problem involving students right now is that their voice it’s not being heard. The government is mistreating them, charging them and they don’t care for their needs. The treatment towards them has improved, they still have are not treated fairly.

STRUGGLE AND ACTIVISM of STUDENTS

STUDENTS PROTEST              On Public High Schools, one of the major problems is bullying. Even though students don’t do a lot to stop this issue, some teachers, principals, and entities make a lot of campaigns. Last year, an 11-year-old student committed suicide because of bullying, and when students of a High School of Oklahoma heard about this, they try to do something about it. They created the campaign “Stand for the Silent”, which involves students signing a pledge card and receiving a wristband with the words "I am somebody”.
Another common example of student activism is in College. Students are constantly fighting because the fees are increasing and College is getting way too expensive. These kinds of protests usually involve large students marching with big and signs throughout the streets or in front of a specific building. Sometimes, they would stand in front of the University so no one gets in, until their protests gather some results. These protests could last from one day, to even weeks. Here in Puerto Rico, there has happened this kind of situations where students would block the University’s entrance so no one can take classes until the Board of Education listens to them.
The real question is, have this protests worked? Well, not so much. Students have been heard, but no one has ever moved a finger to please their needs. College is getting harder and harder to afford, and not everyone qualifies for a scholarship. Sometimes, students even get arrested for these protests, which in my opinion it is wrong cause is not letting them express themselves, which is breaking the 1st Amendment: FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

OPPRESSION AGAINST STUDENTS

I can honestly say that the High School Students and College Students are one of the most mistreated groups in History. They have not only been mistreated just by the Government, but also by teachers, principals, and themselves. Even though there can be many causes for this mistreatment, I think the most common one is DISCRIMINATION.
Throughout the years, there have been many cases of discrimination against students. A stereotype is what would lead to this kind of situation, where a student, who chooses to not follow the group, would end up being oppressed. One example of this is the oppression of Gay students. This type of oppression has been seen in classrooms, where teachers (Who should treat EQUALLY ALL OF HIS/HER STUDENTS) treated differently, and sometimes offensively, these students. Also, a similar situation happened when a lesbian student tried to bring her girlfriend as her date to prom and the school principal canceled this activity because he didn’t want couples of the same sex.
This mistreatment hasn’t only come from teachers or principals, but also from the own STUDENTS. In High School there are many clichés, and many believe that if you want to survive in High School, you have to keep a GOOD REPUTATION. Normally, the minority groups are the ones who end up affected and bullied by the others.
Even though discrimination against students occurs normally in High Schools, we can also see these events at college. It does not involve as much drama as High School, but discrimination against the LGBTI community still occurs in College. We also see oppression of religion, race and ethnicity.
All these situations, the discrimination, the oppression, break the first amendment: FREEDOM OF SPEECH. I think that a human being should not be consider “free” is they don’t have the right to speak their mind (as long as it’s in a respectful way) and choose their own path. The only one who can judge us for our acts is God. No one in this Planet have the right to cut your wings, and if we don’t let a person have freedom of speech, then, in my honest opinion, the others amendments doesn’t do anything for us. In my honest opinion, all the amendments are somehow based on the first one. Is it that hard to accept a person who is different? We are all different and unique, in a good way, why people can’t understand that?

Public University Students: Equalizers or Rebels?

The students of Public Universities are one of the main groups of the United States. Even though they just composed 5% of the country’s population, they are, without any doubt, and influential and strong group that has experienced many changes throughout the years.
When education was provided for the Americans in 1700s and 1800s, there were not many students, due to impossibility of many people to pay a good education, and, only white males were allowed to get an education. By the 1900s, these rules began to change, not only for the benefit of women, but also for African Americans and other races. The “Cave days” are now over, and from just a few thousands, now there are 16 million students in the United States, and the percentage it’s still increasing.
There were so many committees in the Government that would help some groups to learn and fight for their rights, but no one seemed to care a lot for these students, which I found illogical because in order to serve your country, you need to study. Students are the future of every country, and they should be treated fairly. Back to the topic, because there were not many associations affiliated with these Universities, a lot of Student clubs and associations began to form (All this by the 1900s). These clubs or associations, one on each college, would protect the interests for the students, and to decide what is best for them.
This specific group of people has experienced many changes. In the past, they would protest for the wrong reasons. One of the major examples is when the white students did not wanted African Americans to attend their same college, but those times are over. Whites, African Americans, Latinos, and other races are able to assist to the same colleges and should not be discriminate because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.
One of the major controversies involving the students is the fees. Due to the economic crisis in the U.S., the Government is thinking on raising the prize of education (books, credits, etc.) in order to make more money and get out of the crisis. The majority of the students are really   mad; because they think (and I think like them) that education is not a privilege, IT IS A RIGHT, and our legal rights are supposed to be free.
These students, that make protests and boycotts against the Government, are their a group of young, rebel terrorists, or they’re doing the right thing? Keep in touch with this blog for the following days and you will learn a lot of things of this group of people.

Just My opinion...

Ligny's Blog was very interesting. Even though her opinion did not differ with the others' opinions, what makes her blog different is that actually made a research and prove her statements with true facts. I learned a lot of things on her blog: the Native Americans' leaders, customs, etc. Also, she stated her opinion with respect and decent words.

Mykaella's Blog really grasped me since the beginning. "The whites gained their freedom from taking away the Native Americans" was a captivating and deep title that makes you wanna read more. I agreed with her with everything she said. Even though she did not made a research, she used facts that she knew and fitted very well in her point. From her blog, I learn more about the Dakota Sioux and other tragic events that were catastrophic for the Native Americans. She also stated her opinion in a respectful way, and what I liked the most about hers was that she didn't just based her theory in historical facts, she dug deeper, saying of how Americans' personality made them commit the crimes they did.

In Albert's Blog, he stated a good point: where the Native Americans using violence or defending themselves? He first started describing how Native Americans were portrayed in movies, the way they were seen in front of the world. I agreed with him in the fact that Native Americans were defending themselves, even though violence doesn't get us to any good, they were trying to defend their land and their rights. I also enjoyed this blog because from all the blogs I have read, this is the only one that gives me specific details about the Wild West, and I like how he uses antonyms to describe how something was portrayed in movies, and how it was in reality. Very well done.

Angel's Blog was also very interesting. He described almost all the events that happened. He stated a good opinion, on how Native Americans were abused, and how unfair it was. I liked that he also gave he's opinion, also including facts. I agreed with everything he said, and we can see that he put a lot of effort into it, as it was well written and I understood everything he said.

From all the blogs I have read, Paulette's Blog was one of the best. She wrote about assimilation. First, she stated the history, the Native Americans customs; their identity. Then she stated numbers, of how people were killed and wounded. Then she stated her opinion about assimilation. I really enjoyed reading this blog because she did not wrote anything without a real concrete proof, and I agreed with everything she said. NO TO ASSIMILATION!

"Ambition, or Obsession?"

Throughout the decades, the Native Americans have struggled to find their freedom in the supposedly “country of dreams”. They experienced every calamity, every infamy a human being can experienced. From hanging to murdered, abused and chased, Indians passed through all. All of these unfortunate events were a little bit contradictory because when America was founded, it was mainly known for its revolutionary beliefs of human rights. If it was a free country, why did white Americans did not allowed the Indians to be in the country?
Before I start discussing about this topic, we should keep in mind that white Americans were NOT always in control of the United States. Even though the real inhabitants were the Natives, many European countries (Great Britain, France, etc.) colonized America, making the country (called “New England” by that time) a country of different nationalities. A new race was surging after many people settled in the states and started creating their families. These people, Americans by birth, were inferior, and did not have any control of their land. For many years, Americans struggled to find their liberty, and after numerous and bloody wars, they finally succeeded, and with that victory, they did not just gained their freedom, but a certain pride that we still see around.
Why do I think white Americans treated Native Americans so miserably as an obsession? First, I have to give credit to the Nation’s government and people from that time because after the country was formed as the United States, it was very difficult to keep it together, but they have succeeded. I still find intriguing that whites went against their beliefs by treating Native Americans like if they were animals, when in the past, they were treated exactly the same. The Golden Rule says: “One should not treat others in ways that one would not like to be treated”, and coming from the people that struggled for many years against this kind of behavior (against the British), I find kind of “odd” that they would do the exact same thing when they know how it feels to be treated with inferiority. In my personal opinion, this problem was not only caused by ambition, it was also a psychological problem, a fear, a fear of losing the land that they have struggled to maintain.
There is no real scientific proof that can support my theory, but there are a chain of events that can lead us to many conclusions. I based my theory, not just in the events were Americans abused Natives’ rights, but also way back in the past. Like I said earlier, after winning the war against Britain, Americans were finally freed from their chains of dependence. They conquered what they were waiting for decades: to control their own country and be able to make the important decisions. It was so important for them to get their independence, and they proved in front of the whole world that they were capable of anything. With the British out of the way, there was only TWO threats: AFRICAN AMERICANS (SLAVES) and NATIVE AMERICANS.
Why would the Americans wanted to get rid of these two races? Because they represented a threat to their country! They did not want to share, it was THEIR PRIDE, and they might felt that these other races would want to take it away, as in the past, the British was controlling it. It’s understandable, because if I fight for something I want, and after many sacrifices I get it, it would be hard for me to just share it when I was the one who fought for it. Like I said it’s quit understandable if we see it from that point of view, but we’re forgetting one little detail: Native Americans OWNED those lands first, even though it wasn’t written on paper, it was their land that was took away by the white supremacy.
For a country that was based on freedom, they were really judgmental. They tried to make Native Americans assimilate (to adopt the white’s customs) so they can be accepted in society. This has happen a lot of times, even with immigrants, whom are not well accepted because of their different customs. The truth is, Americans did not like what was different, if someone was not white, they would not like it. They would just accept what was the same as everyone else. It had to be their way because if someone did not follow their conditions, there would be fatal consequences.
What for me it is hard to understand is that many of the Americans fought for the African Americans rights, whom were a different race, with different CUSTOMS and a different SKIN COLOR, why they didn’t did the same for the Native Americans? Because African Americans were not a threat at all! Native Americans were difficult to control because their had their country within the country, they would not accept anyone to change their mind, while African Americans did struggled a lot because they were not free.
It is easier to find proof about things that happened, like wars, but when it comes to internal conflicts, it is way harder to predict. My statement is completely based on the events that happened in the past, and based of the personality that we know of Americans, which had not changed at all. These days, Americans still keep their pride and they still have problems with other races (Latin immigrants). To resume this hypothesis in just one sentence: Whites tried to get rid of the Native Americans because they represented a threat, and they would do anything to keep other people to “take away their country”.

Blog #5

Ligny’s blog was very interesting because she wrote about some of her ancestors. I found it amusing because a lot of people in these days does not care about their ancestors, or do not know anything about them. I also read the article that she posted about the Arizona law. I agree with her, it is a, with all respect, pointless law that won’t benefit anybody. If they keep immigrants off the country, nobody would do the dirty jobs, and the country would be filled with a lot of trash and bacteria.
I enjoyed Elsa’s Japanese Immigration post because to be honest, I didn’t know anything about Japanese immigrants. Her post was very well written, I understood everything she wrote and I found it very interesting. Who would have thought that the Japanese got along with Americans before the Pearl Harbor incident? I thought that their country was economically stable and they did not have to immigrate, but I was wrong, every country faces a lot of problems, even the powerful ones.
I liked Yaidy’s immigration journal about an Italian person. She portrayed a lot of emotions through her character and I felt that it was a real story; very well written. I also enjoyed her video about racism. It’s incredible how racist people still can be these days, and make drama of such small situations… just like High School.
Paulette’s post about her ancestors was really cool. Her paternal and maternal sides are very different, and that’s what makes her so unique. She’s descendant from two different types of European groups! I also enjoyed her video about the Arizona law but I do not agree with her. The United States wasn’t found ten, or twenty years ago, it was founded many centenaries ago. The Europeans invaded a country that clearly wasn’t their own, and they didn’t care. The “founders” of this country came from different places of the World, in other words, THEY ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS. I think the actual Americans are contradicting themselves because basically they are all immigrants, and they are such fools if they think that they OWN the country, not even Barack Obama, the president, owns it. If the country was based on immigration on the first place, why should it stop now?

Blog #4

I am a Puerto Rican and I am proud of my roots, my customs and my people, but I do realize that the living in these days it’s hard on the island. I understand that when people immigrate, is for getting better opportunities. In my family, there are some cases of immigration. My grandfather immigrated to Dominican Republic to find better opportunities. The conditions of that country aren’t better than Puerto Rico’s, but he held a really important job there, and thanks to that he has a lot of money. I know of another aunt that she went to Philadelphia for the same reasons as my grandfather, to find a better job. Because she spoke good English, and was not an illegal immigrant, she was able to find a good job, but she knows of other people that didn’t have the same luck as her. She knows some Mexicans, and they all have small and dirty jobs, smart people, but because their illegal status, they aren’t able to find better positions. I know that my grandfather and my aunt are very proud of being Puerto Rican, they watch sport competitions and beauty pageants, and they still root for Puerto Rico on those things. They read the Puerto Rican newspaper everyday on the internet, and they always keep in touch with the ones they left behind when they decided to leave. I have 100% Puerto Rican blood in my heart and veins, I am, and I will always be proud of being who I am, but in order to succeed, we have to make some decisions. If I leave this country, it will be to find better opportunities, but I would keep all the memories and good moments in my heart.

Blog #3

I read the article “Oh, You Mean Those Immigrants” written by Kim Antieau. More than an article is her telling her husband’s story. Mario (her husband) is a European, and because he’s second name is Milosevic (the Butcher of the Balkans) he thought that he would not be able to enter to the States; fortunately he did. She narrates how he had to answer some questions, like “Are you planning on overthrowing the government of the United States?” I honestly have to say, what kind of fool would ask that question, and what kind of fool would say “yes” to that question? She then narrates how she have heard people talking bad about Mexican immigrants, but when she says that her husband is also an immigrant, they said “No, not that kind of immigrant”.
Apparently, some people are not against immigrants after all, they’re against Latin immigrants. They say that “we’re taking their jobs” but they have such a big ego that they won’t accept that they can’t do those dirty jobs because they consider themselves superior. As for the “Are you planning on overthrowing the government of the United States?” question, it was very dumb. A psychopath can be Italian, Mexican, and even American. There can be crazy Americans that are planning to do this, but they won’t noticed because their too busy bothering immigrants. They also have to remember that if they are judging immigrants, they should judge themselves, because the only, TRUE AMERICANS are Native Americans, so those people who judge are also immigrants. Is it really that hard to just share a country like good brothers? IS IT REALLY THAT HARD?
I enjoyed the article because Kim, who is American, didn’t stayed quiet when people were talking bad about immigrants, she was heard, and even though it did nothing to the issue, she proved that not all Americans are against immigrants.

Blog #2: Journal

March, 1849
Aye mates, my name is Kaleb O’Connor and I am from Louisburg, Ireland. I am ten years old and I live with my dad, my mum and my twin sister Annika. Things are not doing great here; an Gorta Mór (The Irish Famine) is invading the whole country. Thousands have already died because of the weird diseases and starvation. Last month, our grandparents died, along with three of my cousins and my uncle and aunt. I miss them a lot. Mum told us that the only choice we have to live is to immigrate. The only problem is that they can’t afford four boat tickets; they only can afford mine and Annika’s. They told us that we can go there, because we’re young and strong, and we can stay with my mum’s aunt.  We can work there, so we can bring our parents later. We’re leaving for the place of dreams in two months.
May, 1849
We are now at the Port. We already said our goodbyes. In tears, mum told us “Be brave my children, we’ll see each other again”, and then we got into the boat. It is indeed a long journey, and not in the best conditions, but we have to survive in order to live a better life. Two weeks and we’re still on the boat, today is our birthday, and some of the other kids got us some candy. We miss our parents so much. A couple of months have already passed and when we were losing our hope, there it is, on the Ellis Island, the big green lady, our freedom, what we came here for.
October, 1849
Life in New York is really tough. Annika and I got jobs at a factory, and we go to school at the same time. We still do not have a lot of friends, just another girl who is also Irish and a French kid. I don’t know why Americans don’t like us; we have not done anything wrong to them. Yesterday we got a letter from our parents, they’re hoping that we will get the money soon, because things in Ireland are getting worse, more people are dying and they do not know if they will survive. Annika and I decided to drop from school so we can work all day and gain more money. I thought America was the land of dreams, but I was wrong.
February, 1850
Work is so hard, even for eleven year-old twins. This morning Annika was so tired, that she did not wore her ponytail, and our superiors clearly told us that every girl should at least wear a ponytail for safety reasons. While we were working, a machine grabbed her hair and cut it, along with some parts of her hair. Her painful screams were heard everywhere, and didn’t stopped for hours. I was crying for help, but it was too late, she was not coming back. How I am going to tell mum and dad? I asked myself, as some workers threw her body away. Wait, they are really just throwing her body away? And we are still going to work? These people are animals, they don’t care about us! Why did we ever left Ireland? I got home, and I told my aunt what happened. She was already crying, how did she knew before I got home? Apparently, she was crying for another reason, it was a letter she got early. She lends me the letter, and as I read it, my eyes were tearful again. Dad died three months ago from starvation, and mum got a mortal disease that will end her life soon. I am all alone, all by myself, my whole family is dead, and where is the American Dream?
The End

Irish Immigrants: The Story of this Unique Group!

Immigration has been a controversial topic in the States throughout the nation’s history. This problem did not start a few years ago with Latinos crossing the border illegally; it is much more than that. A lot of people from the Globe immigrate to America, including Irish people. A lot of reasons made the Irish leave their country, including population growth, and since Ireland is a small island, it wasn’t that hard to “fill the whole country”. Another reason was the political subordination and the controversy between different religions.
For the Irish it was never easy to enter to the States. Many of them left their home because of the great famine that was killing thousands in the country. The journey was long and exhausting, but the worst part was, that their destination was not Heaven at all. Hey came to the country with no capital, no jobs, nothing, it was a new start, from the bottom.
This group of people, like most of the foreigners in the country, took the harsh jobs, such as builders and peasants, but this trend started to change throughout the years. The city growth demanded more people to work, and the Irish began to take more “important” jobs. They began to work as policemen, firemen, and others.
I have never cared for the Irish people, whenever I heard about them, I just thought of “St. Patrick’s Day” or the end of the rainbow. Thanks to this project I learn that these people are very special, not only because of the famous “St. Patrick’s Day”, but because they always do what they want to do, without caring about what other people think. They express themselves in a way that nobody else can do; they are, without any doubt, very unique.
